Chicago Demonstration

If you follow all the rules, nobody pays attention. Sad

(This protest was to encourage the impeachment of Bush. While I admit to smiling alot while watching them, my urge to video and share it was not driven by their message but by my belief that because they followed all the rules – and thus weren’t going to get in trouble – it would be completely ignored by the mass media. I would have done the same thing had they been on the other side of the political fence.)

  • I work right on that corner 20 North Clark. What day did you take that?

  • Looked good! What camcorder/camera do you have?

It was a little hard to hear you but I got the gist of it. The Chicago cops walking along side is a little scary to me. In L.A. they are off to the side, or a few are sprinkled in wearing plain clothes. We are a little “sensitive” about that much police contact.

  • Chicago’s mayor’s policy on protest and crowd mangement has been very consistent over the past few years. He feels that the best way to keep things from getting out of hand is a huge show of force. He is rather liberal in where he lets protestors go and do the protesting but he will line the streets with cops in riot gear to keep anyone from even thinking about getting out of line.

I remember when we last hosted the G8 summmit and the protestors wanted to march a bunch of blocks to hte hotel where it was taking place. Daley lined the entire marching path with cops in riot gear on both sides! its was a pretty immpressive thing to see on tv. In the end the conference went off with out a hitch and the protestors made a splash since there were about 10 blocks covered in cops and protestors.

  • This was a nice video.

  • hey cool, i couldnt make it down for the march, so i was really happy to see some footage of it. thanks!

  • Hi David,

Excellent video, you really captured the flavor of the protest and made an excellent point – media does tend to “reward” bad behavior and “punish” good behavior. I assume though that it made the local stations.
