For Memorial Day, I thought I’d share with you my trip to Pearl Harbor …

  • First I was impressed that you spliced in old public domain footage of Pearl Harbour… but then I was REALLY impressed when I saw your Quicktime interactive links at the end of your video.

    I is jealous… Razz

  • Thanks Casey. (I’ll send you the how-to on the quicktime links if you like).

    Update:

Another Videoblogger I really enjoy has posted a Memorial Day video from (modern day) Hawaii … it’s a good follow up to this video: Beach Walk #97 – Memorial Day in the Pacific

  • Awesome video David… I was there 5 years ago and nice too see your footage, as it was a different perspective from mine! It was a amazing experience to be there, I recommend that everyone visits at least once in their lifetime.

  • Wow David, I love the synchronicity between our shows today. Thank you for this. As one who is not in favor of war in general, I think visiting these powerful places (Like the Arizona and the Vietnam Vet Memorial in D.C.) is a great way to begin to feel the weight and horror of war. War memorials are not usually on the tourist agenda for many of us…

What I noticed was how theatrical the news reel coverage seemed – by contrast it made today’s war coverage in the MSM actually look somber to me. Go figure.

  • David – As a Vetern of the armed forces I want to thank you for this wonderful tribute…..

    Thank you!

  • Great video.

  • And thank you, Heath, for your service.

I agree, Kev, Pearl Harbor should definitely be on the list of must-see attractions for anyone able to make the trek to Hawaii. And Rox, you’re right, these memorials do (thankfully) remind us of the horrible costs war inflicts on us.

It is indeed interesting to watch the old news reels. While they are clearly part news and part propaganda … WWII had with it a very clear ‘greater evil’ which the sacrifice of war could be weighed against – or at least thats how it seems to me. I think that sense of nobility is very apparent in those old films, and is perhaps something we lack in our current war.

Nobody likes war … not even soldiers … After all, sometimes wars start for no good reason. Sometimes they’re started for outright bad reasons.

But … sometimes …. they are seemingly the only thing peace-loving nations can do other than simply watch unspeakably greater-evils being inflicted on the world.

Sure that sort of justification can be too liberally applied, (and I could think of several examples off the top of my head), but sometimes its true.

… eh I’m getting off on a tangent that could be its own full blog, and I don’t want to argue justification of any given war … so I’ll stop while I’m ahead.

    In summary:

    a) War sucks

    b) War happens

    c) Thanks to those who serve

    d) Here’s hoping we can avoid putting those soldier in harms way except in the most dire of circumstances

  • David I hope you don’t mind but I used some of your footage in my reaponse/memorial day video…..I realeased my under the same CC Licence
